June 18, 2001, Las Vegas, Nevada --- Rudy Lauwereins obtained his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Leuven where he was appointed in 1993 as a Professor in the Faculty of Engineering.  In 1998, he acted as Advisor to the team that won the Northern European section of the Texas Instruments DSP Solutions Challenge and last year, he was elected by students as the best teacher of the engineering faculty’s Master’s curriculum.

As Vice-President of the DESICS Division, IMEC’s System Design Center of 125 researchers, Professor Lauwereins aims to develop IMEC’s leading R&D activity in embedded ICT Systems Design, currently focused on the development of architectures, methods and tools that will create the smart networked devices needed for true ambient multimedia.

“We are developing the key technologies to make this a reality,” notes Professor Lauwereins.  “These smart devices of the future will be based on high-performance, compact, low-cost and ultra-low-power radios-in-a-package, design technologies for networks of mixed reconfigurable hardware and programmable software devices, and quality of service provisions for interactive multimedia applications.”

Professor Lauwereins has authored and co-authored more than 240 publications in international journals and conference proceedings.
