Smart Phones are common place today and tablets are quickly becoming equally abundant. What made these devices so successful in such a short time period? Was it the hardware, with the introduction of the touch screen, GPS, gyroscope and accelerometers? Or was the breakthrough caused by changes in user interface, like multi-touch support or speech recognition and even understanding? Or was the fast adoption triggered by the introduction of content and application stores, making your device a virtually unlimited music, photo, video, books, periodicals and applications library?

More importantly, which breakthroughs can be expected regarding hardware (e.g. holographic displays, 3D video capturing, electronic nose), user interfacing (e.g. gesture recognition, situation awareness), and service and content delivery (e.g. mobile payment)? How are these evolutions impacting business models and changing the value chain?

This seminar will address all these questions and many more. It will provide you with a clear understanding on why and how smart phones and tablets impacted economy as well as our lifes and will present a glimpse towards the next mobile experience.

Last modified on 25 January 2012, 00:00

Mobile phones, smart phones, mp3 players … they become ever smaller, with ever smaller screens and keyboards. What we really need is an interface that is lightweight, so that we can carry it around, but that is large enough to match our senses and fingers. For example a pliable or rollable interface.
Thin-film electronic devices on flexible plastic foil are a solution for this. These transistors are the building blocks for flexible plastic displays and computing devices. These can be used for a wide range of applications, think of rollable displays for tablet computers or phones, electronics printed on toys, intelligent food packaging, or paper with integrated electronics.
However, the performance of the transistors that we can process on foil still needs to be improved. And techniques need to be developed to integrate the transistors into increasingly complex circuitry.
The active materials for the plastic electronics are organic molecules and oxide semiconductors. Wherever possible, low-cost patterning techniques need to be used, to make sure this technology is commercially viable.

Last modified on 26 October 2011, 00:00

Atomic layer deposition (ALD)
has evolved over the last 45 years from a laboratory experiment to a technology enabling deposition technique used widely in the semiconductor, solar, biotechnology industry... ALD is an advanced technique to deposit thin films on a substrate from gas phase precursors. The film is deposited layer by layer through a cyclic process of self-limiting surface reactions. The use of self-limiting surface reactions results in a number of unique features such as growth control at the atomic level enabling nanoscale engineering and tuning of the properties of extremely thin films, as well as conformal deposition on extremely complex nanostructures. The advantages of ALD are increasingly exploited in applications, for example as high-k and metal layers to enhance computer logic and memory chips, passivation layers for solar cells, gas sensing layers, dielectric and electrode deposition for solid state supercapacitors, ...
