Imec performs world-leading research in nanoelectronics. We leverage our scientific knowledge with the innovative power of our global partnerships in ICT, healthcare and energy. We deliver industry-relevant technology solutions. In a unique high-tech environment, our international top-talent is committed to providing the building blocks for a better life in a sustainable society.

This mission is backed by 4 trends in the electronics industry:

  1. Scaling electronic devices and circuits will continue for another decade. It will be driven by Moore’s law, following the technologies described in the international technology roadmap for semiconductors (ITRS). Imec has the infrastructure and expertise to keep its top position as a research center in scaling, both for logic and memory technology. And imec is preparing to start R&D on 450mm wafers, should the semiconductor market set these as a new standard.
  2. CMOS processes can be used to develop new micro- and nanodevices with extended functionality such as sensors, MEMS, or NEMS. These applications promise to be the driver of a new industry with strong business growth and exciting R&D opportunities. The technologies include heterogeneous integration, photonics, advanced packaging, such as 3D integration, flexible integration, ... They can be applied in biomedical electronics and autonomous embedded appliances.
  3. There will be a growing need to combine higher performance with complex and extended functionalities. This convergence will impact IC design, processing, integration, and packaging.
Further scaling will also create new opportunities for heterogeneous integration—think of the nano-bio convergence. Imec is well positioned to follow this trend because of its broad expertise in many domains. Combining these will result in a unique innovative leverage.
  4. The microelectronics industry leverages its expertise in materials and processes to create more efficient and cost-effective solar cells. Imec has been doing photovoltaics research for 25 years; we have made the generation of sustainable energy one of the cornerstones of our strategy.
